O edifício integra o conjunto do Parque da Independência, próximo ao Museu Paulista. Foi incorporado a Universidade de São Paulo como museu em 1969, detendo um dos maiores acervos zoológicos da América Latina e cumprindo papel crucial no desenvolvimento do conhecimento acerca da biodiversidade brasileira e global. O corpo principal de três pavimentos se estrutura em torno de um salão expositivo central com escadas duplas que abriga, além do grande acervo, uma área para pesquisas científicas. A fachada de composição simétrica, modulada e dotada de pouca ornamentação, revela sua filiação à linguagem acadêmica e ao mesmo tempo um desprendimento do repertório ornamental.
The building integrates the cluster of the Independence Park, near Paulista Museum. It was incorporated to the University of São Paulo as a museum in 1969, holding one of the largest zoological collections in Latin America, fulfilling a crucial role in the development of knowledge on the Brazilian and global biodiversity. The main body of three levels, structured around a central exhibition hall with double staircases, houses the large collection, as well as an area for scientific research. The facade of symmetrical composition, modulated and provided with little ornamentation, reveals its affiliation to the academic language, and at the same time, its detachment from the ornamental repertoire.
